How many types of pine trees are there in Ontario?
We have many just on our property. I know about Red Pine, White Pine, Spruce and Tamer-ac. How do I tell the different varieties apart from one another?
Pines are all members of the genus Pinus. The following are known to grow in Ontario, but some may be 'escapes' from gardens, etc.
Pinus banksiana (Jack Pine)
P. cembra (Arolla Pine)*
P. densiflora (Japanese Red Pine)
P. nigra (Austrian Pine)*
P. resinosa (Red Pine)
P. rigida (Pitch Pine)
P. palustris (Longleaf Pine)*
P. strobus ((Eastern White Pine)
P. sylvestris (Scots Pine)
Those marked with an asterix * are found in Ontario but are probably introduced.
