Why timer hockey game instead of having to bottom?
As far as I know all the countdown timers other sports, not just hockey. Account from 00:00 to 20:00 minutes per period.
Canada and U.S., the two most important countries for hockey, began using this timer. For sports in all other countries, all have timers until it easier to advertise. (Ie: A goals with 7:47 on the clock read as Olympic 12:13, which is the time to advertise.)
